Dachshunds
Dachshunds are known for being “lively and courageous to the point of rashness,” which makes sense given what they were bred for! Originating in Germany, their name translates to badger dog. Dach (meaning badger) and hund (meaning dog). Standard Dachshunds were bred to hunt badger and other animals who dwell in burrows. Miniature and Rabbit Dachshunds were bred to hunt smaller animals such as rabbit and rats. All sizes of Dachshund were bred to go to ground, hence their unique structure. Considering the breeds development, Dachshunds also have a unique blend of Hound and Terrier attitude. Dachshunds are another breed that is more intelligent than most people give them credit for.

When looking for an Ethical Breeder, remember…
Dachshunds only come in three coat types: Smooth, Long-haired, and Wire-haired. If you see breeders promoting their dogs as “silky,” this is a backyard breeder term and against the Breed Standard coat types. An ethical breeder will never intentionally breed incorrect coat types.
An ethical breeder will never breed for specific colours, promote fad or “trendy” colours, or intentionally breed out of standard colours.
Ethical breeders will never breed two Dapple dogs together as Double Dapple dogs can have serious health issues such as congenital blindness, deafness, and other physical and genetic abnormalities.
In North America (AKC and CKC), Dachshunds come in two sizes: Standard and Miniature. The FCI categorizes Dachshunds as their own separate Group and they recognize Rabbit, Miniature, and Standard sizes.
